Frequently Asked Questions?

I have just bottled my batch of wine. What do I do when I get it home?

Leave your wine standing upright in the boxes for 4 to 7 days. This will allow the residual bubbles from bottling to escape through the crevices and cracks in the dry cork and to allow the pressurized air pocket between the wine and the cork to be alleviated. Once at least 4 days has passed, it is best to store your wine on its side, in a rack or in boxes tipped on their sides. This allows the wine to moisten the dry cork, causing it to expand and form a good seal for aging. It is not necessary to store the wine upside down.

What are the best conditions to store wine?

We recommend a room that maintains a constant temperature all year round and isn’t too humid (Preferably between 10-18C or 50-64F). Damp storage conditions can cause the corks to mould and your wine to go off before its time. Cooler storage areas allow the wine to age more gracefully and slowly, while warmer temperatures are conducive to faster aging. Storing wine in a place with constant and dramatic temperature fluctuations will harm the aging process and may cause your wine to go off. Direct sunlight or constant artificial light can also be detrimental, so store your wine away from direct sunlight and in a room where artificial light will be kept to a minimum.

I get headaches from drinking wine – do you put sulphites in your wines?

Our wines generally have lower sulphite content that commercial wines. Though we can never completely neutralize the content as it is a natural byproduct of the fermentation process. Please mention your concern and we can limit any additional sulphite.

What do I have to do?

You have to be present at the beginning to add the yeast and at the end of the wine making process to bottle. You come in to start the batch and bottle the wine batch – we take care of the rest!

How long will I have to wait?

Generally, our most popular wine batches take 4 – 8 weeks

Can I order over the phone?

Unfortunately we are unable to take orders over the phone, you must be present for your order

How do I know what quality of wine kit to purchase?

Our business is built on providing a wine very similar to the commercial wine that you like at a fraction of the price. Our trained staff will make suggestions based on the quality and price point of the wine you purchase. We strongly suggest that, when you get started, you make the highest quality wine kit available. The cost savings are well worth it and you will have wine that tastes like fine commercial wine at a fraction of the cost!

Can I really make wine that tastes as good as the best commercial wines?

For over 45 years, our customers have resoundingly told us that the wine they make from our kits ranks with commercial wine costing much more. We invite you to blind taste the wine you make with comparable commercial wine. We believe you will be very pleased with the comparison.

How long will I have to age my wine before I can drink it?

Your wine will be very palatable soon after you bottle, particularly if you decant the wine for an hour or two before serving. As the wine ages in the bottle, you will be excited to discover how the wine softens and matures. Our staff can provide you with aging guides for each brand of wine kit.

Is my home suitable for making wine?

Fortunately, great wine can be made in most household environments. As mentioned above, you don’t need a lot of space. Most winemakers make wine in the basement or in the kitchen, as it is handy to have a water source nearby. The best temperature range is 65 – 75 F. (18 – 24C.). Because you are working with a kit, there is virtually no odour involved.
